Biden signs bill to require report of cyberattacks

Last week, President Biden signed a new law requiring companies to report all cyberattacks within within 72hrs of its discovery.

The Biden administration is concerned about potential attacks from the Russian government. Due to the sanctions placed on Russia for the war in Ukraine, cybersecurity experts remain on high alert.

The FBI was alerted to foreign activity when several networks from U.S energy sectors were scanned for vulnerabilities, which have been traced back to Russia. The administration strongly urges businesses to strengthen their cybersecurity.

The creation of this law is intended to help improve detection of any future attempts.  As this law leaves much to interpretation, it may take several months to iron out an effective process.

How can businesses strengthen cybersecurity?

  • Require employees to use multifactor authentication
  • Update software and encrypt data
