BlackMatter ransomware to blame for recent critical infrastructure attacks

US critical infrastructures have been at the helm of massive cyberattacks over the past few years. BlackMatter is responsible for the September attacks on New Cooperative and Crystal Valley, both farm service providers.

First discovered in July 2021, the ransomware targeted several U.S. entities, including the Food and Agriculture sector organizations. According to the FBI, they believe the cyber group is likely a rebrand of a known cyber enemy, Darkside.

The reason BlackMatter is so dangerous is because unlike other ransomware attackers, they have targeted critical infrastructures, which could affect consumer access to these services.

According to CISCA and the FBI, you should do the following to protect yourself:

  • Implement and enforce backup
    and restoration policies and
  • Use strong, unique passwords.
  • Use multi-factor authentication.
  • Implement network segmentation
    and traversal monitoring.
