Invest in cyber security

6 steps to staying ahead of cyber attacks

Cybersecurity continues to be in reoccurring news cycles as a major concern for businesses, regardless of where you live. No one is immune to cyber attacks.

Prioritize your business expenses by making cyber security a top priority. Do not skimp on this as it may bite you later on down the road.

Cybersecurity teams are critical in this day and age. It allows us to stay one step ahead of growing cyber attacks. Here are 6 ways in which we all can contribute to providing top cyber security.

1. Keep Security a top priority

Invest in a strong security culture by ensuring that the security team or third party source is visible and regularly spotlighted company-wide. If security is always on the forefront of our daily tasks, it sends a strong message to  everyone in the organization participate.

2. Train And Educate Employees

Education will be a big part on combating cyber attacks. Training employees to be made aware of certain types of scams such as phishing emails or fake popups about a infestation to your hard drive could save your cyber security team a lot of time and energy from reversing what was unintentionally created by an uninformed employee.  The training should be hosted at minimum once a year, preferably more.

4. Run Simulations

Anticipate there will be problems by creating fake scenarios. This could be a fun game for your cyber security team where they could access their problem solving skills and later apply them to real life situations.

5. Create And Maintain A Cyber Policy

It only takes one breach to cause major damage to a company. To prevent or mitigate this, every company should have a cyber policy in place. This should be updated regularly and shared with all members of the organization. A cybersecurity policy includes things like:

  • Best practices for handling hardware
  • password controls
  • what to do in case of a breach
  • how to report it to the right person.

Once these guidelines are in place and acknowledged then the team can run like a well oiled machine.

6. Partner With A Firm

A key strategy is to partner with a firm that can provide the necessary skill and can react when needed. This type of service is often cheaper than having an onsight cybersecurity team too. The right partnership should be an extension of your business.
