Russia strikes again

Microsoft says the US government is latest cyber attack target

Thursday, Microsoft announced American government agencies have become the target of yet another Russian cyberattack. As a result, over 3,000 emails were compromised by the same cyber bullies that attacked SolarWinds in April.

Approximately 24 countries were discovered to have email breaches, but the majority of those are believed to be US. NOBELIUM, is known for targeting government agencies, non-government organizations, IT service providers, and etc.

This latest attack came in the form of a phishing email that was sourced back to US Agency for International Development’s account on a marketing service Constant Contact.

Microsoft’s post contained a screenshot of one of these emails, which claimed to contain a link to “documents on election fraud” from former President Donald Trump. Each email sent is tailored to the receiver.

These types of attacks on government organizations are showing no signs of slowing, as hackers are remaining one step ahead due to previous attacks becoming public. In its post, Microsoft said they would continue to monitor the situation and update when necessary.

Microsoft Products that provide protection from these types of attacks

  •  360 Defender for Office 365— detect malicious emails
  • Defender for Endpoints –- detects the malware and malicious behaviors
