Learn how to be an effective team player
Depending on the job, working solo may not be an option. Regardless of the company’s size, collaborating with others will be required. Master the top three ways of being a team player.
- Open-minded
- Communication
- Adaptability
Be open-minded
The most important aspect of collaboration is being open to new ideas. Sitting in on those weekly meetings is a great way to see where the team is headed. The process can be not only unfamiliar, but exciting too. Toss some ideas around and see what sticks.
Leaders, encourage your curious team. Place parameters on what the discussion will entail. This way, all ideas can be heard, discussed, and expanded upon.
Communicate clearly
Successful collaboration is communicated thoughtfully. Your team needs a safe place to express themselves. People communicate differently. Creating clear and open communication means acknowledging the various styles and adapting accordingly.
Be adaptable
Be able to adapt is an important skill to have, but also difficult to teach. The best way to approach this is to practice what you preach. Your team will follow your lead.
