Microsoft released a patch during January patch Tuesday that created more harm than good for some Windows Server users.
The patch was intended to fix security issues and the Japanese text appearance issues for Windows 10 and 11. The problem no one expected is the havoc in its wake. Many users experienced unexpected restarting of Domain Controllers and VPN connections using L2TP failing.
Windows Server 2012 users suffered:
- Stuck in a boot loop
- Broken Windows VPN client
- Hard drives appeared as RAW format (and unusable)
Windows released an out-of-band (OOB) update Tuesday that should rectify these problems, but it requires admins to download last week’s patch as a prerequisite in order to correct it. Some admins are preemptively expecting issues and have planned to move data before attempting the download.
