BlackMatter made one major mistake with their coding. A loophole of sorts, which allowed other cybersecurity experts to take the private material back, without paying them a cent.
Emsisoft, the New Zealand group responsible for discovering the flaw, located multiple victims from the United States, the UK and Europe. The firm was able to return their data. It yet to be confirmed, during last month’s major US infrastructure attack, two agriculture organizations are believed to have recovered their data with the assistance of Emsisoft.
The FBI and CISA are strongly encouraging businesses to do the following to protect themselves from cyberattacks:
- Implement and enforce backup
and restoration policies and - Use strong, unique passwords.
- Use multi-factor authentication.
- Implement network segmentation
and traversal monitoring.
